What kind of games do you play?
« on: December 01, 2013, 03:18:08 pm »
Hey was hoping to get back into gaming soon. What kind of games do you play?

I used to be good at SC2 but disliked new expansion. I know a few of you love DotA so why?

Any other competitive games around?

Dota has to be one of the most rewarding games out there.

Because the game is constantly changing. New strategies, new heroes, and new teams come out all the time.
The game has a history on warcraft III (and it's still being developed on wc3!).
The gameplay and strategy are nuts... there's so much to dota I could talk about it for days.
Dota2  is one of the fastest growing and popular games today. Ditch League of Legends... the game is a lot easier than Dota, and everyone that plays both has told me Dota has more dimensions.
You should also learn dota because MASS sheeptaggers already know how so we could teach you. Also, you don't have to pay to get it... you already own warcraft III ^^

Don't waste your time learning dota a game thats 10 years old and doesn't even have ranks. Just wait for Heroes of the Storm to come out. Blizzard always makes quality products so I'm sure Heroes of the Storm is gonna be legendary. In the mean time just play http://www.tetrisfriends.com/

Jokes on you beer, since dota 2 is the most recent MOBA and has the best graphics. If your computer can't handle it I still suggest playing dota 1, since it's more up-to-date, has a loyal following, and sheeptaggers play it daily.

from what i heard, heroes of the storm is gonna be trash with decent graphics. according to rumors from testers, HotS is gonna be dumbed down and simplified alot. if put on a spectrum, dota would be on 1 side, LoL would be in the middle, and HotS would be on the other side, in terms of simplicity, lack of depth, etc.

and funny that beer uses the age of dota as an argument against it. if anything, this just indicates that the game is way more tested and balanced than the games that just recently (relatively) got released ^^

only people who haven't tried dota (tried it beyond playing a few rounds; really learning it and understanding the gameplay) thinks LoL is even remotely good. people like beer defend LoL because they don't want to accept that they're spending 8 hours per day playing a game that's almost identical, yet clearly inferior, to another free game ^^ the basis is psychological/emotional, not rational.

dota2 got more depth and mastery than LoL. Dota2 (unlike LoL) doesn't have graphics that would embarres a 14+ year old if his friends caught him playing the game. and dota2 is more balanced. im tempted to claim that dota2 is objectively better than LoL, but i won't go there :D

Three things.
One: It does have ranks, DotA like many other products in this world don't want to appear to discourage noobs. So they don't allow you to be ranked unless you allow them to rank you. If you want to be ranked, allow dotabuff to read your profile. It will tell you where you sit in terms of game play.

Two: Blizzard are terrible at supporting their own games competitively. Ask anyone who has attempted to play it professionally, I have a lot of mates who are pro starcraft players and they are sooo jealous of DotA2, they hate the game, but they look at the support valve put in(EG: the international with a massive prize) and they are just hugely shocked. Therefore "Heroes of the Storm" we'll see how much support they give their product, but I doubt they could contend with Valve.

Three: DotA is ever changing, strats come and go all the time due to the game being reballanced, the only thing I hate is the fact that teams are unstable, EG: loda has been in 4 different teams since 2010, Screw DotA, LET'S PLAY ST!

Blizzard is the only reason competitive gaming got a chance in the first place. Without Sc1 competitive gaming would probably never gotten passed MLG which is a joke. Funny you say you have many friends who are pro starcraft players. Being master and being pro is 2 very different things. If they were actually pro they wouldn't complain because there is huge tournaments for Sc2. Also why would they be jealous of Dota 2 and not League? League has way more chances for prizes etc. if thats what your looking for because thats all Riot gives 2 **** about **** making a game says Riot and just focus on making it competitive.

Kinda disappointed at all the hate for Heroes of the Storm before its even out. I guess thats a typical Dota player thought 100% unwilling to try anything else and instead talks about how amazing Dota is and how no other game can compare even though they haven't played anything else besides Dota.

You quoted you quoting me? ugly to read, anywayz, prepare for a massive post!

Blizzard is not the reason gaming got a chance in the first place, they did nothing to support SC1, they didn't even update the game regularly. Their focus back then was Diablo II and Warcraft III. The reason gaming got a chance in the first place was the community, Starcraft I and II's main community can be located at http://www.teamliquid.net/. If Koreans didn't find that game so enjoyable, Starcraft I would have been dead many years ago. Blizzard did not support their game. You clearly know s.h.i.t all on the subject.

Being GrandMaster on the server means that you are pro lol. It also depends on which server. NA is a decent server, The Korean server is a lot better to be GM of, but NA is probably 2nd or 3rd best. The Korean server has only opened up to be played on for everyone outside of Korea within the last 8 months.

Now prizes and tournaments was just one example of how Valve support their game. Other examples include and not limited to:
- Providing tournament tickets to be purchased which fund the tournament directly.
- Providing a Guide section inbuilt into the game.
- Providing a coaching function inbuilt into the game.
- Providing a public spectator view with casting in game.
- Regular updates(The only game that has instant patches to bug fixes is wow, the rest of the games suffer).
For example: A current known bug in the game is that, in the observer interface, you try to set it on default, but every time you restart the game it resets back to streamlined. This matters for anyone who is attempting to watch/learn from replays of themselves(where they went wrong)/other pros. It's been a known issue since HOTS was in beta, how hard can it be to stop stuff from resetting?

Now here is something even funnier, SCII was doing a lot better without Blizzards help with the competitive scene in terms of hosting tournaments, now that they are helping **** is going even worse.
For example they hosted the last WCS this year. For anyone who doesn't know what the WCS is, it's a bunch of tournaments being held in different regions, this year Blizzard decided to not put a region lock on the WCS, so every single Region ended up being a Korean party for the WCS. Not only that but the prize pool was lowered from when they weren't running it.

Recently they have also prevented other broadcasters from making tournaments. So those broadcasters are now going to other games EG: NASL have left the SCII scene.

Also on a side note, they put Season 1 finals this year to be played at the same time as Dota 2's TI3, that was a huge mistake. For anyone that has interest in both scenes had to choose, which of course according to the views at the time, Dota 2 won.

Blizzards view on games is old and deprecated, they are there for the initial sale of the game, they are not there to maintain it, they are not there to help esports, which that is ok. That means that games like LoL and Dota2 will always be far ahead of anything Blizzard could produce until they change said view.

I'm not 100% unwilling to try the game lol, I'm stating FACT. It's a fact that Blizzard do not care about their games after they have set their eyes on a new project.

Warcraft III didn't have to die, but it has, it relied on the community to run tournaments that include prize money. Since the community dwindled after WOW's release, it had to face the inevitability of being removed from all well known community ran tournaments. Now their Ladder scene is about as big as our Sheep Tag scene LOL! All tournaments for their ladder scene can be found here now replayers.com(VERY SAD).

If Blizzard put time and effort into maintaining Warcraft III, it would be active until Warcraft IV's release.
If they put the time and effort into maintaining Starcraft II, it would be vastly more active than it currently is.

Diablo III died due to the game mechanics and it isn't the companies fault, it's head management of that game, they made some terrible choices with a lot of the things that were implemented(Otherwise I'd be playing that right now, I was a HUGE Diablo II Fan Boy. I bought Diablo III when it came out and had planned to make that my new game, but it got boring after I reached max level(50 or some**** back then). The spell system wasn't as good, neither was the item system. The nerfs and updates were pretty silly and ****(my preferred mode), was not that great in the 3rd edition of Diablo.

Their most successful game is still booming(WOW), it is still the most played MMORPG and why is this? They maintain their game, people don't even mind paying the monthly cost for doing so. I personally do not like this game, it's not my type of game, the only bit about WOW I did like was the PVP capabilities. I soon got bored of that too.

Holy son of a geek calm down there tiger. Anyways Heroes of the Storm is going to be free download so your theory on "they only care about initial release" may be true, but they are going to have to change that for Heroes of the Storm.

you can copy the idea, you can copy the format, you can copy the layout... but you can't copy RESPECT! you can't copy INNOVATION! you can't copy the FANS!!

the BRAIN that works on Dota2 is the brain that actualized the MOBA/dota genre. it's the brain that took a limited engine (wc3) and created the most popular multiplayer concept in years! THIS is the brain that keeps dota2 running, this is the brain that brings new ideas and innovations to dota2.

in contrast, the horsebrain that's behind LoL are people who failed to successfully develoup dota (mapmakers prior to IceFrog). the brains behind LoL failed to make the genre grow, they had to wait for icefrog to clean up their mess, and then they copied icefrogs new ideas and concepts into LoL.

which of these BRAINS do you think will create the best product and experience long-term? choice is EASY :D dOOOTAAAA

What are the best mods for skyrim? I was considering playing skyrim again and installing a shitload of mods, but im mainly interested in mods that increase the aesthetics of the game. Texture mods, lighting mods, body mods, and so on. do you recommend any?

Give more info on this game. i considered trying it before, but decided not to (didn't look that good, although it did have good reviews). what do you do in the game + do you recommend it?

and based on your steam link, what do you think of The Witcher 2 and Torchlight 2? recommended games or trashcans?

The problem I had with Skyrim mods is that I wanted to do them all via Steam Workshop, but some really great ones weren't there :/

Unofficial Skyrim Patch   - and allother patches for Dawnguard if you have Dawnguard etc.
Interesting NPCs
SkyUI you need SKSe for this though, but for most mods you need SKSe

The best collection of best mods is here:
http://www.skyrimgems.com/

Also check this link: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/topalltime/?adult=2
For mods I'm subscribed to on Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/browse/?appid=72850&p=1&section=items&browsesort=mysubscriptions&browsefilter=mysubscriptions&sortmethod=creationorder

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Game Dev Tycoon I found to be **** awesome, I'd say buy. Too bad you missed it on Steam Sale 50% off though :/

- The Witcher 2 is **** boss + has sex scenes YEEEEEE. Also The Witcher 3 is coming soonish.
- Torchlight 2 I found more fun than Path of Exile and I played it with friends that was fun. If you want to buy this idk, don't really have a good opinion of it because I don't like these games in general :P

Mike, your reasoning for D3's defeat is wrong. D3 failed because it was an ugly cross between an MMORPG and a Hack and Slash, rather than just the traditional Hack and Slash we expect from the Diablo franchise.

And of course there were some turd elements, but those could have easily been fixed/avoided (which I believe they were).
